This project started with a two-storey brick house in a great location, but with an awkward tile roof and a small front balcony that did not make the most of the ocean view. The client’s brief was to capture more of the view and create a large balcony space to extend their living areas. Other internal works included a multipurpose garage/utility room, renovation of the existing bathrooms and laundry, and raked cathedral ceilings to the upper floor.
Working within the existing footprint and constrained by underground services, we looked at several different options through the design process and in negotiation with Council. The house now has a contemporary look with large-scale hardwood timber framing, Shou Sugi Ban charred timber cladding and VJ-grooved lining to the walls and ceilings. Polishing the existing floor slab and exposing interior brickwork adds texture and makes great use of the materials already in the house. And the generous front balcony is a beautiful space to enjoy the incredible view.
